26: From Insight to Impact—Preparing Healthcare Facilities for the AI Inflection Point
A fundamental shift is underway in how facilities are operated, maintained, and optimized. As highlighted in recent thought leadership articles such as “Something Big Is Happening,” artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from incremental improvement to transformational capability, reshaping how knowledge work is performed across industries. In healthcare facilities, this shift is beginning to materialize through new approaches to operations, decision-making, and system integration. To better understand this transition, AEI has led a knowledge exchange with 17 institutions across healthcare, higher education, and corporate real estate. These conversations reveal a consistent pattern: while AI adoption is still early, the trajectory is clear. Leading organizations are moving beyond isolated pilots toward a future where AI augments facilities teams, providing real-time insights, automating workflows, and enabling proactive operations. In healthcare environments, early use cases include AI-assisted fault detection, root cause identification, daily operational briefings, and conversational interfaces that support technicians in the field. However, the most critical insight is that AI success depends less on the tools themselves and more on the readiness of underlying systems—data standardization, integration, governance, and alignment between IT and facilities. This session will share a forward-looking perspective on how healthcare organizations can prepare for this inflection point. Attendees will gain insight into emerging use cases, common barriers, and the foundational steps required to transition from reactive operations to intelligent, AI-enabled facilities management.
