06: Introducing the 2026 FGI Codes for Planning and Design: What You Need to Know
The Facilities Guideline Institute is set to publish the 2026 version of their code document for Inpatient Hospitals, Outpatient, and Residential Healthcare facilities. FGI has history to the origins of healthcare planning, traced from the original Hill Burton Act to the federal government publishing a version, then switching to the American Institute of Architects, and finally to the Facility Guideline Institute.
The 2026 version moves from a Guideline to a Code. Using a presentation prepared by FGI, and delivered by a member of the 2026 Health Guideline Revision Committee (HGRC), this session will describe the important changes to each different occupancy documents but also explain how becoming a code will affect the format and enhanced backup information that has traditionally been part of the overall document of the FGI.
